Peugeot 107 gets a diesel engine before C1 and Aygo
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 30 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The small Peugeot is now available in France with a 4-in-line diesel 1.4 HDI engine delivering 54bhp at 4,000rpm. When mounted in a 206 or a C3, this block offers 70bhp. Of course it does not perform as strongly as the petrol unit, but then, it returns an average 60mpg. Contrary to the 3-cylinder petrol engine, it can’t be coupled with an automatic transmission. The smallest Peugeot HDI has a top speed of 95mph and reaches 62mph from and standstill in 15.6 seconds.
It should be available at the end of the year in the UK, priced at £1,000 over the petrol version.
Anyway, this car has a major drawback: Fiat's Panda Multijet with its 70bhp.

Honda delivers a Fuel Cell vehicle to the first customer ever
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 30 June 2005 | (1) Comments | Permalink
The revolutionary Honda FCX, an advanced hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle, was delivered on June 29 to the Spallino family, who signed a 2-year agreement with Honda. They’ll use the FCX as an ordinary vehicle for everyday’s commute, in California. Reducing pollution is a big concern in California, and last April, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the state’s commitment to a Hydrogen Highway built underway by 2010 with both public and private money. Without this, the delivery of a fuel cell vehicle would not have been possible. The fleet will be extended to 13 cars throughout the USA.
The Spallino’s invaluable experience will help Honda develop this technology. The FCX is the only vehicle certified by US EPA (environmental protection agency) and CARB (California’s air resource board) . It can run even at subfreezing temperatures, returns 62mpg for a range of 190 miles, with no emission..

Corvette Blue Devil to take on Viper?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 30 June 2005 | (1) Comments | Permalink
Even if the Z06 already delivers 507bhp, Chevrolet is still seeking to increase the power of the Corvette. Even if the company still has not acknowledged it, a 600bhp supercharged Corvette nicknamed “blue devil” is to be released at a price that might reach $100,000, but not before 2007. This Corvette, whose body may be partly made of carbon fiber, was caught on test on the Nürburgring track. According to Autoweek, GM vice chairman Bob Lutz confirmed there would be “something beyond the Z06”. Keeping up with its tradition, the Corvette might outpower such prestigious European supercars as the Aston DB9 or Ferrari 612 at half their price or so.

Production of Ford SAV concept confirmed
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 30 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Early 2006, Ford will release the name and characteristics of a new minivan deriving from the SAV Concept seen in Geneva last March. Positioned between the Mondeo and the ageing Galaxy, it’ll be made in Ford’s Belgian factory of Genk. Contrary to the C-Max, the yet-to-be-named new minivan will offer accommodation for up to 7 people. But like the C-Max, it’ll appear as a somewhat sporty people carrier, remaining close to the prototype. Hence, one might guess it’ll replace the Galaxy, released some 10 years ago. It’ll hit the showrooms summer 2006.

FIA postpones sanctions
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 30 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
After Wednesday’s council, the FIA decided not to apply sanctions to the teams incriminated in the Indianapolis affair before September 14. These 7 teams are more likely to have to pay a fine than to lose points. 2 charges out 5 were held against them:
- They were found guilty of not having made sure they had suitable tyres, but with mitigating circumstances
- They were also found guilty of refusing to start the race.
Max Mosley declared he’d pay attention to how the teams will compensate the fans and that the Council would take a decision concerning the penalties in the extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on September 14. Team managers kept a low profile during the meeting, which might have pleased Mr. Mosley. Some of them even declared President Mosley liked to humiliate people.
As for Michelin, which was not summoned at the hearing, the FIA can’t impose a penalty on them. Anyway, the company had previously decided the refund the spectators.
Postponing the decision until September 14 is a smart idea actually. Firstly, the FIA keeps the teams under control, secondly, the organisation adds some suspense for the public. One day, maybe, someone will understand Formula 1 is a matter of motorsport rather than politics.

New Seat León is a lot more than a flattened Altea
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 29 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
At the last Geneva Motorshow, Seat had shown a prototype of the new León, now here it is in flesh, sporty, dynamic and almost identical. It strongly recalls the Altea, but offers a more slender silhouette. With its hidden rear door handles, the new León looks like a 5-door coupe, in the manner of the… Alfa 147! Actually, it’s not by chance, for both were drawn by Walter De Silva.
Technically speaking, the new León is very similar to the Golf V, just like the previous León was based on the Golf IV. We find the same engines and floorpan, but the Seat has a different suspension tune up, for it’s supposed to be sportier. More charismatic than its predecessor, the new León is bigger too, now 4315mm long and 1768mm wide. As a consequence, accommodation has been improved.
The client can choose between 3 petrol engines (102bhp 1.6, 150bhp 2.0 FSI and 185bhp T-FSI) and 2 diesel engines (105bhp 1.9 TDI and 140bhp 2.0 TDI). Top units are coupled with a 6-speed gearbox, while the DSG is available on the 2.0 TDI only. The 2.0 T-FSI can reach 137mph and sprint from a standstill to 62mph in 7.8 seconds. Too bad this unit does not deliver 200bhp like on the Golf GTI. We can expect more powerful engines to be released. There’s a choice of 4 trims, Reference, Sport, Stylance and Sport-up. ABS, air-conditioning, 6 airbags and CD player are standard on all models, while the dual-zone climate control or ESP require no extra pound from the Stylance trim only.
Prices will be inferior to those of the Golf: a stylish competitor for the Vauxhall Astra, Renault Mégane, Ford Focus, Peugeot 307 or Citroën C4.

Michelin will refund US spectators
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 28 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
On the eve of the FIA World Motor Sport Council to be held on Wednesday in Paris, where harsh sanctions could be taken against Michelin and the teams that refused to race in Indianapolis, the French tyre maker publishes this press release.
One week after the Indianapolis Grand Prix, Michelin wishes to make a sincere gesture of goodwill towards the people present at the GP, a group whose passion for F1 is encouraging in the development of this sport in the United States. Therefore, on our own initiative and in total solidarity with our partners, we have taken two decisions:
• 1. Michelin has decided to contribute to the costs incurred by the spectators present at the circuit on Sunday June 19th 2005 by offering to refund their tickets. This is an important decision, since Michelin is not at all legally bound to do this. Michelin deeply regrets that the public was deprived of an exciting race and therefore wishes to be the first, among the different groups involved in the Indianapolis race, to make a strong gesture towards the spectators.
• 2. Michelin also offers to buy 20,000 tickets for the 2006 U.S. Grand Prix to be given to spectators who were present at the Indianapolis race in 2005. We are offering this to promote further Formula 1 interest in the United States. We would also like to take this opportunity to underline the fact that it is unacceptable that our partner teams have been accused by the FIA of having boycotted the Indianapolis Grand Prix. The reality is that together, Michelin and its partners have done everything possible to assure that the race could take place in total safety. We are extremely disappointed that the proposals made with all our teams were not accepted. These proposals, including a chicane, were technically viable and totally met all safety requirements. On Sunday morning, June 19, the sporting authority had all the means necessary to preserve the interest of the race. And yet, the sporting authority rejected the proposed solutions.
Why? In our view this is totally incomprehensible and reflects a lack of respect for the spectators. It is the spirit of respect for the spectators that brought us, with our partners, to propose solutions to allow the race to take place in total safety. It is this same spirit that leads us today to make this gesture."
Press Release
Michelin
Michelin still holds the FIA responsible for what happened in Indianapolis and yet offers to refund the spectators. Putting the pressure on the FIA with this highly political text, Michelin might think Max Mosley could hardly account for severe sanctions against them and the teams that withdrew from the race. Let’s wait for FIA’s reply.

Citroen C6 to become Chirac’s new favourite ?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 28 June 2005 | (1) Comments | Permalink
Revealed at the last Geneva Motor Show, in a dimly lit area of the stand, the executive Citroen will go on sale next September. Citroen has taken the risk of granting its 4-door saloon (yes, it’s not a hatchback) a special styling recalling the CX. Besides, this 491cm-long car will be fitted with the latest evolution of Citroen’s famous hydraulic suspension. Inside, a head-up display and a Lane Departure Warning system helps the driver, and like the DS, the C6 has directional headlamps. In addition to all this, the equipments match the highest standards of the category. Besides, the passengers will be protected by nine airbags.
Under the bonnet, only 2 engines will take place in a first time: the PR 3.0 V6 delivering 215bhp at 6,000rpm (already on the Peugeot 607 and Renault Laguna) and the 2.7 twin turbo HDI V6 delivering 208bhp at 4,000rpm that has been co-developed with Ford. Despite their qualities, I don’t think these engines will be sufficient to compete with Mercedes, Audi or BMW. Besides, prices are expected to start at £30,000 while the hi-tech cockpit doesn’t show the same quality level as that of an Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class or Lancia Thesis. It does not even exude warmth or pleasure, with cold fabrics and central console commands that are identical to a 407’s. Some details seem to have been neglected, like this Parker screw on the external side of the door panel.
Citroen hopes to sell 20,000 copies of its C5-based saloon a year. A bit optimistic…

Latest EuroNcap results

The EuroNcap has just released new results
- Fiat Stilo **** Test Scores: Front 11 (69%), side 15 (83%), 1 belt reminder. Overall 27. Pedestrian 8 (22%), child protection 37 (76%)
Strong, stable body for the Fiat which, strangely enough was tested 4 years only after its launch.
However, the driver undergoes high loads on his chest while legs are not so well protected. The Stilo offers good protection for children but not for pedestrians.
Fairly good on the whole.
- Dacia Logan *** Test Scores: Front 8 (50%), side 11 (61%). Overall 19, pedestrian 5 (14%) child protection 31 (63%) As expected, relatively poor results for the low-cost saloon made by Renault and badged Dacia, despite the fact it shares its platform with the new Clio. Feet and legs are at risk while side impact protection is notoriously feeble. However the structure remains quite steady.
- Renault Clio***** Test Scores: Front 14 (88%) , side 18 (100%) 1 belt reminder. Overall 33. Pedestrian 9 (25%), child protection 39 (80%).
Very strong performance for Renault’s new supermini, which offers a sound structure and protects children very well. On the other hand, it’s still dangerous for pedestrians.

Fiat planning major costs savings
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 28 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Fiat Auto CEO Sergio Marchionne wants to accelerate Fiat Auto’s recovery with several cost cuts, rationalizing research and development, spending less on advertising and reducing staffing. He seeks to save €105 million in 2005 and €180 million in 2006 on wages, €150 million on communication and €200 million on R&D. Even if GM gave Fiat €1.55 billion for breaking their alliance, Fiat’s situation is not safe yet. It should soon be better off with such new models as the Punto III, the new Croma or the oncoming SUV, but then, the brand has to face the misfortunes of the Punto II, Idea and Stilo. Marchionne hopes Fiat will break even in 2006.
Fiat chairman Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo announced Fiat’s priority is to find industrial partners to create such alliances as that made with PSA, since 2 of their main markets, Italy and Poland, are not performing well at all. We know that there have been negotiations with SAIC, Suzuki and Tata. Besides, he claimed the rumours of Ferrari being brought to the market were not founded. Fiat’s situation seems to become clearer and clearer, with a stabilized management team and an array of new models, such as the Alfa 159, Fiat Punto III or Lancia Delta III in 2006. Besides, Marchionne confirmed there would a big crossover made by Maserati, a brand he hopes to see sell 10,000 vehicles a year as soon as 2007. Anyway, everything still depends on the success of the new Punto.

F1's battle still running… but not on track
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 28 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Max Mosley strongly recalls he is the boss and asserts he’s not been moved by remarks after Indianapolis’s fiasco. He has summoned the 7 teams using Michelin tyres to the FIA world Motorsport Council to be held on June 29, in Paris. Minardi Boss Paul Stoddart warned if the sanctions turned out to be out of proportion, the teams would boycott the Grand Prix de France next Sunday. What could sanctions be? A simple warning, a loss of points or, more likely, a series of bans. Stoddart puts the pressure on Max Mosley more particularly, accusing him of not having found a good compromise in Indianapolis. Mosley retorts he had previously prevented Stoddard from being stolen his money by other teams some time ago and that he must have forgotten to take his medication.
Besides, Mosley bears a grudge against Michelin and the teams running on their tyres: he asserts their behaviour was totally stupid and thinks the tyres were not that faulty… Eventually, in his mind, Michelin and the incriminated teams should give the Indianapolis Grand-Prix organizers a compensation they would fairly distribute to the spectators. Thus, the French tyre maker and the 7 teams could avoid severe sanctions.
Mosley wants to apply the F1 rules as fairly as possible, without any consideration of profit as he puts it. He reckons that, being the leader, his aim is not to be popular.

Alpina Roadster S gets cheaper
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 28 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
With a maddening power-to-weight ratio (300bhp for 1320kgs), the Z4-based Alpina Roadster S dashes from to 60mph in 5.3 seconds and reaches 165mph. The Buchloe-made roadster is now cheaper, with a range starting at £38,750 OTR, i.e. the same price as a Porsche Boxster 3.2S, delivering 276bhp, but £1,752 more than a 350bhp TVR Tamora. We can expect the Alpina to be more reliable though. At this price, the Alpina comes with an air conditioning, 19’’ alloys, n extended leather upholstery, a cruise control and 6-CD changer. Almost a bargain in fact…

159 SW underway
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 28 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Alfa Romeo could not escape replacing the stylish 156 SW. In a few months, it’ll be done as these spyshots indicate it. Like the 156, the 159 SW will rely more on style than on boot capacity, but then, an Alfa is not made for carrying heavy loads, except on the accelerator. Apparently, both Giugiaro and the Alfa Centro Stile did a great job, and once again, Alfa’s estate (call it Sportwagon) should stand out by its elegance, besides, it might not be longer than the saloon. Alfa targeting Audi and BMW, quality will have to be beyond any reproach, but we can expect prices to rise. The 159 Sportwagon should officially be released for the Frankfurt motor show.

StudioTorino RK Spyder
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 25 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
You think the Porsche Boxster is good but commonplace ? The Studiotorino RK spyder might be a solution for you. Alfredo Stola and Alois Ruf collaborated to create this new Boxster-based sportscar, endowed with the best of Italian and German craftmanship. Such providers as Poltrona Frau, Bilstein, Brembo or PPG are involved in the programme. If StudioTorino assembles the body and the cockpit, Ruf is in charge of the engine. Fitted with a centrifugal compressor, the flat-6 3,8 engine delivers 420bhp at 7000rpm, with a torque of 450Nm at a high 5,500rpm. The RK Spyder can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.8 seconds and from 0 to 125 in 13.8, for a top speed of 175mph.
Even if it derives from the Boxster, the RK Spyder does not share many components with it, only the front left fener, most of the body being built by Studiotorino. The rims have specially been designed by Toora while the leather of the seats is provided by Poltrona Frau. Of course, it’s possible to make it even more personal. No detail has been overlooked, this car’s a fine piece of machinery. Only 49 of them will be assembled.

Ssangyong Rodius makes Multipla look commonplace
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 25 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Weird, strange, huge, bizarre, outlandish : how can we qualify the styling of the new Rodius ? Ssangyong reckon it’s the relexion of the practicality of the Rodius. Indeed, this MPV, designed by former head of the automotive design course at the Royal College of Art in London Ken Greenley offers accomodation for up to 11 people, in its Koran version. In Europe, it’ll seat 7 ‘only’, but thanks to its 5125mm length and its 1915mm width, they’ll be able to take all the luggage they want. The passengers may seat either on foldable (even backwards) rail-mounted (but not removable) central chairs or a rear bench that’s foldable backwards too and removable provided you don’t mind carrying 38kg.
The 2 ,7 163 bhp diesel engine is provided by Mercedes-Benz, and so is the tiptronic style 5-speed automatic gearbox. This won’t be too much to move the 2.2 tons of the Rodius. ESP is standard on all versions, while the interesting 4x4 transmission is optional.
Contrary to the smart Fiat Multipla, the Rodius does not compensate its odd styling with an innovative architecture.

More power for the Mini D
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 24 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
75bhp for the Mini D while many other superminis can offer up to 130 (Seat IBIZA, VW Polo), this was not enough. In September, the Mini will get 13 more horse-powers and reach 88bhp. In the mean time , torque will increase by 10Nm to 190Nm, thus, the Mini will be able to accelerate from to 62mph in 11.5 seconds, reach 109mph and return 58.9mpg. Not enough to worry a Peugeot 206 HDI 110 driver though.
Along with this power increase, all Minis will receive a better equipment –CD player will become standard-, new options and new prices. The new Mini range will start at £10,995 on the road.

BMW buys Sauber
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 24 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Peter Sauber and Le Crédit Suisse, a swiss bank, will sell the majority of their shares to BMW. Early 2006, BMW will the take over the reins of Sauber and create a new team called BMW. Peter Sauber should work as a counselor, as will no longer rule the team. The Hinwill factory will continue to be a swiss company anyway but it’ll be a sattelite of BMW, which will increase the number of its employees.
The transfer of share will be made in two times, BMW first buying the majority of those held by Peter Sauber, then, in 2008, purchasing those of the swiss bank.
Peter Sauber, 61, considers the purchase of his team by BMW as a good thing, since it’s become very hard for teams like his to keep up with top teams in terms of performance. Since the arrival of important car makers like Renault, Toyota or Mercedes, raising funds has become harder and harder for independant private teams. Max Mosley wants to prevent independant teams from leaving the F1 by setting new rules imposing to cut the costs by 90% in 2008. By this time, those teams won’t have left, chances are they’ll have been bought by carmakers. Too late, Max…

Jetta, Vento, Bora and... Jetta!
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 22 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
As odd as it may seem, not only is the Jetta VW’s best seller in the USA, but it’s also the best selling European car there. Besides, the Golf-based saloon has always been tagged Jetta there, while in old Europe, it was successively called Jetta, Vento and Bora. The latter’s successor, first launched in America, now arrives in Europe. Stretched to 455cm, and widened to 178, the Jetta has been sized up, following the example of the Golf V. As a consequence, it offers better accommodation and boot space, with 527 litres. 7 engines are available, with power outputs varying from 102 (1.6 FSI) to 200bhp (2.0 T-FSI ). Of course, this range includes TDI engines, which can be coupled with the DSG robotized gearbox. Anyway, even if 6.5 million Jettas have been built since 1979, it’s not thanks to the European Market where it is challenged by the Passat. VW expects to see it sold in the US mostly, which explains why it’s built in Mexico.
The new Jetta will reach the British shores early 2006.

New Civic at Frankfurt?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 22 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Needless to say that today’s Honda Civic has not been endowed with the same charisma as the 80s-made Civics’. Moreover, its sombre cabin has been of no help, despite its good accommodation. The spyshots as well as the concept-cars shown by Honda let us guess that the oncoming Civic will try to seduce us in the manner of its ancestors. Apparently, the new Honda will hide its rear door handles so as to look like a coupe, just like a 5-door Alfa 147 does. Inside, there should be 2 instrument clusters in front of the driver, one right behind the wheel and another one at the base of the windshield.
Besides, the new Civic will also come as a saloon.
Amazingly enough, the concept car recalls a Delta Integrale-based prototype released by Pininfarina in 1988, the Hit.

Brera in Goodwood
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 22 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Alfa Romeo will bring its highly desirable Brera in the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 24-26 June. This beauty, built upon the same platform as the new 159, is the incarnation of the splendid prototype created by Giugiaro in 2002. Alfa has not betrayed the original prototype. Unveiled in the last Geneva Motorshow, the Alfa Brera will offer 3 engines: a 2.2 litre 4-in-line delivering 185bhp, a 200bhp diesel 2.4 litre five-in-line and a 260bhp 3.2 V6, all already seen on the 159. The production of this 440cm-long coupe will debut early July and it’ll probably hit British showrooms in 2006, at a minimum price of nearly £25,000. However, one might wonder why Alfa has been granted 2 coupes, the GT and the Brera, while Lancia has none.
As a sponsor of the renowned festival, Alfa Romeo will display mythical cars such as the P2, Fangio’s 159 Alfetta, the 8C Le Mans, a 33 Le Mans, a 1750 Gran Sport and even a 6C 2300B. Of course, the new 159 will be there too.

Fiat gets smart with Piccolo Bello?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 21 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Last year, at the Geneva Motor Show, Fiat unveiled the lovely Trepiuno, a kind of 3rd millennium 500, which was enthusiastically greeted. At last, Fiat decided to exploit the extraordinary sympathy conveyed by the 500. Of course, everybody found it logical that Fiat produced the Trepiuno. Everybody but Fiat… It would have been too simple. Arguing that it’d be too expensive (£10,000) and too close to the Panda, Fiat decided to shelve it and began studying the Piccolo Bello. Why not. Given that the Smart Fortwo meets a considerable success in Italy, replacing the 500 in people’s hearts, Fiat thought it a good idea to take up the same concept and to improve it. In the same way, Fiat had tried to imitate the VW Golf and launched the Stilo… When did you last see one?
Like the Smart, the Piccolo Bello is a rear-engined minute car. But the Italian engineers have been trying to find a solution to offer accommodation for four people instead of two, in a car that’s not more than 270cm long. As a matter of fact, the rear bench will be mounted over the engine. So, to provide decent headroom, the height could reach 170cm. Various storage spaces will be scattered throughout the cockpit: beside the rear bench, above the glove box or under the front bonnet. Besides, the driver will enter the car opening a sliding door, just like in the Peugeot 1007. There will be just one though.
The Piccolo Bello will be built alongside the Panda, in Poland, at a rhythm of about 150,000 copies a year. Some say the basic price will not exceed £4000 when it's released in 2007.

Mercedes unveils new S-Class
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 21 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Launched in 1998, the previous S-Class has sold 480,000 copies up to now, which makes it the best selling luxury saloon in the world. Mercedes intends its new S-Class to meet the same success and to do so, has laden it with technology. In terms of active safety and comfort, we find a few innovative systems:
- Brake assist plus: fitted with a radar, this system registers the cars ahead and gives a warning if the gap is too small. Moreover, if a collision threatens, the system calculates the ideal braking assistance: the car will brake as strong as it can even if you don’t apply enough pressure on the pedal. In the mean time, the adaptive brake lights will flash.
- Pre-safe plus: if the car detects an emergency situation, it’ll tension the seat belts, inflate the air-cushions in the seats to give the driver more support and close the side windows.
- Distronic Plus: using the same components as the Brake Assist Plus, this systems keeps the car at the right distance from the vehicle ahead, and, in stop-and-go traffic, will go as far as stopping the S-Class and make it re-accelerate automatically. Not a good reason to read and drive though.
- Night view assist: two infrared lights detect non-visible objects at night, which are then displayed in the instrument cluster.
Mercedes’s new flagship is even larger than its predecessor and like it, is available in two lengths: either 507 or 520cms. It’s also 16mm wider and 29mm higher. Its huge wheel arches recall that of the new Fiat Croma while the boot lid makes one think of the BMW 7-Series. On the whole, the new S-Series shows a slender silhouette conveying a sense of dynamism, which is quite amazing for such a big car.
Under the bonnet, the engine range has narrowed to 4, with 3 new units. We find the 3.2 V6 CDI delivering 231bhp, the usual 272bhp 3.5 V6, a new 5.0 litre V8 block delivering 388bhp and the 6.0 litre V12 boosted to 517bhp, available in 2006. All these units are coupled with the 7 speed G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The Airmatic suspension is standard while the Active Body Control is optional, except on the V12. I don't expect Mercedes to avoid competition with the Audi A8 4.2 TDI or the BMW 740d, especially as they have an excellent V8 CDI in store...

Kristensen’s seventh victory in a row in Le Mans
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 20 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Even if the Audi R8s were not the fastest cars on a lap – they were compelled to carry ballast and reduce their power– , one of those engaged by American Champion Racing team won the race thanks to their consistency. Bearing in mind the Pescarolos were quicker, they paid great attention to reliability and the pilots did the rest, committing no fault. Champion Racing team drivers Kristensen, Werner and Lehto led the Audi R8 number 3 to victory. It’s the seventh for Danish Tom Kristensen, who thus surpassed Jacky Ickx.
World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb was on the Pescarolo number 17, but a flat tyre on hour 20 caused the car to crash, preventing it from finishing the race. The Pescarolo number 16, driven by Collard, Bouillon and Collard, was on pole position but the, after 2 hours, the gearbox broke down, forcing it to stop for 30 minutes. Despite a fantastic recovery during the night, the three French pilots were not able to make up for their lost time, staying behind 2 Audis, because of a coolant leak. The Audi that was second crashed, allowing the French team to finish on second position, ahead of 2 other Audis, respectively driven by Champion Racing team pilots Pirro, Biela and McNish and by Oreca team pilots Montagny, Ortelli and Gounon.
On the fifth position we find the Corvette C6.R that won in the LMGT1 category, after a tough struggle against the Aston-Martin DBRS9, while a Lola won in the LMP2.

Anything rotten in the kingdom of F1?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 20 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
One might wonder indeed. It was an unbelievable sight: after the formation lap, all the cars using Michelin tyres headed to the pits. Only six that were supplied for by Bridgestone remained on track and ran the race: 2 Ferraris, 2 Minardis and 2 Jordans.
How was such a situation made possible? First, last Friday, Ralf Schumacher crashed his car in Turn 13, a fast banked curve, presumably because of a faulty tyre. Given the violence of the shock, his doctor advised him not to run the GP two days after. On Saturday, replacing Ralf in the Toyota team, Ricardo Zonta met the same problem and had an accident too. Soon, Michelin agreed to say their tyres were not safe on this track and stated teams using them should not race unless they were allowed to use brand new tyres coming from Franceovernight. Arguing it was against the rules, the FIA said, no.
Then, Michelin claimed that speed should be reduced, by means of a chicane laid before Turn 13, to ensure certain level of safety. 9 teams agreed on this proposal, but once again, the FIA turned it down, say it’d be unfair for the teams running on Bridgestone tyres.
What was to happen happened: Michelin runners did not take part in the race. 14 cars quit the track and then, to the woos of the crowd, began the most ridiculous Formula 1 grand-prix in all times. Schumacher won, Barrichello came a close second. So close that the Ferrari drivers nearly had an accident. The next four are, by order of arrival, Monteiro, Karthikeyan, Albers and Friesachier. Bridgestone and these 3 teams got the job done: was it that difficult? There’s one positive element though: Jordan and Minardi scored points, which will ensure them a financial income.
Speaking of money, will the 150,000 spectators be given theirs back? They widely incriminated Michelin and remarked they had not made it to Indianapolis just to see Ferrari testing their cars.
Formula 1 was already struggling for a good image in America, now, what shifted from a safety to a political issue made it look contemptible even in Europe.

Trulli emerges first from an odd qualifying session
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 19 June 2005 | (2) Comments | Permalink
Last Friday, during a practice session, Ralf Schumacher violently hit a wall, because of his tyres as it seems. Replacing him, Ricardo Zonta met the same problem and crashed his car too. Fortunately, they were not injured. Nevertheless, Michelin confess they don’t exactly know what happened and thus, want to be allowed to fit new tyres on all the cars they provide – as a precaution–, which is prohibited by F1 rules. The authorities have yet to take a decision concerning Michelin. They are under a very high pressure for the teams provided by Michelin have threatened to pull out the race if the French tyre manufacturer advised them to. In this case, the race would be cancelled, which remains unlikely given all the money involved.
All the pilots pushed very hard to be in pole position and eventually, Italian driver Jarno Trulli turned out to be the quickest on track, in spite of what happened to his team mate, posting an impressive 1m10.625 in his Toyota.
In his McLaren, Kimi Raikkonen is very close behind, only 0.069 slower. Then we find Button (BAR), Fisichella (Renault), Michael Schumacher (Ferrari), Alonso (Renault), Barrichello (Ferrari), Sato (BAR), Webber (Williams), Massa (Sauber), Montoya (McLaren), Villeneuve (Sauber), Zonta (Toyota), Klien (Red Bull), Heidfeld (Williams), Coulthard (Red Bull), Monteiro (Jordan), Albers (Minardi), Karthikeyan (Jordan) and Friesachier (Minardi).
McLaren, Renault and Ferrari did not meet many problems during the session and say they feel confident. On the contrary, WilliamsGP were not satisfied at all but they hope their strategy wil help them.
Of course, strategies will be a big concern: in a same team, 2 pilots may have different ones, which explains why Raikkonen is second while Montoya is only eleventh. Many pilots complained about the lack of grip, so tyres will play a key-role. How will Bridgestone react if Michelin is allowed to bring new tyres in?

Special Fiats for UK
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 19 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
A few months ago, Fiat released the Stilo Schumacher throughout Europe. Fiat’s compact car simply received new bumpers, a red paint and a few Schumacher badges. Rightfully, Fiat UK thought this was not enough and, with the help of Prodrive, decided to fit it with OZ Superturismo 18’’ alloys, front and rear springs made by Eibach, Bilstein dampers and a rear silencer with 2 pipes enhancing the sound of its 170bhp 2.4 five-in-line. This Stilo Schumacher GP was launched last month, in the UK only, at a price of £16,995. Only 200 copies will be made.
Now Fiat UK launches the Panda Sporting Special Edition. This sporty version receives new bumpers and side skirts, special alloys, lowered suspensions and the most powerful engine in the Panda range, the appraised 70bhp 1.3 Multijet. 400 copies will be produced, priced at £8,995. Fiat promises a unique finance package for young drivers.
These 2 cars look sportier than they actually are, but then, we can’t reproach Fiat UK for not addressing the brand’s main problem: an appalling image.

F1 to take a great step… backwards in 2008
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 18 June 2005 | (1) Comments | Permalink
Last Friday, the FIA issued a proposal for new F1 rules to come to application in 2008. Max Mosley wants to reduce manufacturers’ costs by 90% so as to reduce the gap between top teams and less performing ones he’s afraid to see leave the championship. Moreover, he takes it for granted there’s no need of advanced and costly technology to ensure a good show. “It may fascinate the relevant engineers that by spending millions of euros they can build a new gearbox with ratios that are 0.25mm thinner, but no-one else knows or cares. There is no additional value for the watching public who, ultimately, pay for the whole thing” Mosley says. Besides, to him, the cars go too fast, which endangers pilots and marshals and compels race organizers to spend more and more money upgrading the safety of the circuits.
As a consequence, cars should lose power (engines should receive an FIA-made ECU), downforces be reduced by 10%, electronic helps almost suppressed and all the cars be fitted with a clutch pedal and a fully manual gearbox. There would be only one tyre manufacturer appointed by the FIA while wheels could become wider and slicks tyres be allowed again. Besides, gear ratios, differentials, and brakes should be provided by an FIA-approved supplier. No more spare cars, no more telemetry between pits and cars. Eventually, tests should be reduced to 30,000kms over a year.
The new rules must be finalized by the end of September.

Urban mud bath for SUVs
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 18 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Tired of nasty remarks on your Freelander that has never left London? There’s a solution for you: Sprayonmud. This a bottle filled with mud collected in the centre of England. Just spray it on your car and it’ll look as if you had spent the week-end off-roading in the countryside. Of course, it’s harmless for the paintwork. Anyway, don’t forget your plate numbers must remain visible so don’t use it to fool radars. Eventually, even if your car was delivered late because the factory had been invaded by ecologists, please don't spray mud on them alleging it's for the sake of their skin, badly damaged by pollution and nights spent sleeping in trees.
Sprayonmud is not even expensive: only £7.95 for a 75cl bottle.

Grinnal Trike R3T
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 17 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Famous 3-wheeler maker Grinnal unveiled the Trike 3T last month and plans to start production late June. Based on the Triumph Rocket 3T, Grinnal’s trike delivers around 150bhp, a good car’s power for a third of its weight. Thus, this vehicle should provide breathtaking acceleration for 2 people. A 3-seater version is on study and could be produced if there’s enough demand.
Under the pillions, there’s storage for 35 litres of luggage. Besides, the rear boot contains 45 litres.
Indeed, not only that this trike provide astonishing acceleration and awesome styling but also a certain practicality.
Production will deliberately be limited while orders have already been passed: don't wait too long to buy this great three-wheeler.
What a paradox: the UK is a country where no driver (or rider) can escape controls of many kinds, where speed limits are strictly enforced and yet, there remains such small crazy carmakers as Grinnal, making indecently fast vehicles, such as not only the Trike but also the Scorpion III and IV.

Chrysler PT Cruiser gets revamped in its turn.
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 17 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Yes, Chrysler has just modified its lovely PT Cruiser. Those who love it should not worry though, for there’s no dramatic change. We notice new headlamps, foglamps, grille, and Chrysler badge outside. Inside, modifications are more numerous: new seats, air vents, instrument panel and centre stack with a raised radio. Armrests are now mounted on a central console, which contains storage for 6 CDs and a power outlet. Sound insulation has been improved too.
Technically speaking, the 2.0 turbocharged engine is boosted up to 230bhp and we can expect the diesel units to be upgraded too.
Even softened, the style of the PT Cruiser remains very typical, which is an outstanding quality among such dull minivans as the VW Touran, Renault Scenic or Vauxhall Zafira. Even Fiat gave the quirky Multipla a flairless front end.

Renault shoots first unveiling Clio III
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 17 June 2005 | (2) Comments | Permalink
After 7 years and 4.5 millions copies built, the Clio II gives way to the Clio III. Developed in 28 months only, the Clio III takes up the B-platform already used on the Renault Modus and Logan as well as the Nissan Micra and Cube. In the Clio III programme, Renault has spent €953 million among which 630 were committed to production–related investment.
Renault has not taken any risk when drawing the Clio III. It’s a nicely balanced small car, sharply contrasting with the audacious Mégane II, from which it borrows the rear suspension scheme. In the cockpit, there are more references to the Mégane, such as the door handles and dials. Accommodation is claimed to be noticeably improved - shoulderoom is now 138cm - and so is the boot capacity, raised to 288 litres, or 1,038 litres when the rear bench is totally folded. However, contrary to that of the Yaris, the bench can’t slide. These values remain just average though, for a 5-door Punto’s boot has a capacity of 297 litres for example.
The equipment has not been left aside: hands-free card, automatic air-con, panoramic electric sunroof, Carminat Guidance System, rain and light sensors, cruise control with speed limiter and parking assist with reversing radar are standard or optional.
If Renault managed to improve roominess, it’s because passing from second to third generation, the Clio has been sized up. With a length of 399cm, a width of 170cm and a wheelbase of 257mm, the Clio is now the biggest in its class. But it might not last too long for the oncoming Punto III, Corsa and 207 will follow the same trend. This increase has a counterpart: the Clio III weighs 1,090kgs at least, with a peak at 1,210kgs for the 5-door 1.5 dCi. Besides, with a 0.72cdA drag, aerodynamics is quite poor. Rigidity and safety should nevertheless benefit from this increase, Renault targetting a 5-star EuroNcap rating.

Facelift for Vectra and Signum
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 16 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The Vauxhall Vectra and Signum get facelifted so as to face such new ambitious rivals as the new VW Passat and Fiat Croma. The Vectra receives a re-styled front end, with a stretched bonnet, new grille and headlamps, and bumpers recalling those of the Astra. On the whole, the new Vectra looks more dynamic. It also receives a new CDTI 1.9 litre engine delivering 100bhp, which is provided by Fiat. We also note a new tuning of the front and rear suspension. More interesting is the IDSPlus chassis fitted with a Continuous Damping Control (CDC), i.e. electronically adaptive shock absorbers.
Inside, the top sections of the facia and doors receive a new trim while the instrument panel and air vents get rounded corners.
Vauxhall/Opel has sold more than 600,000 Vectras since 2002 and hopes to invert declining sales. As for the Signum, even though it’s more of a commercial failure than a success, it is not left aside. It receives new headlamps, stretched upwards, and a new supercharged 2.8 V6 engine delivering 230bhp, with a maximum torque of 330Nm at 1500rpm only. This unit allows the Signum to reach 155mph and accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds. The evolution of its cabin is very similar to that of the Vectra.
The new Signum and Vectra sales will start next September.

Nissan unveils Micra C+C
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 16 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
On the occasion of the 4 millionth car produced in Sunderland, Nissan unveils the new Micra line-up. It includes the 160SR and the Coupe-Cabriolet C+C. The latter has been co-developed with german famous coachbuilder Karmann. Having invested € 146 million in it, Nissan intends to sell 20,000 Micra C+C a year. This new cabriolet rivals the 206 CC and has a major advantage on it: its roof is made of glass. 9cm longer and 11cm wider than a normal Micra, the C+C needs space to store its roof (foldable in 22 seconds). When the roof is folded, the boot capacity is reduced from 426 to 221 litres, which remains an excellent value for such a small cabriolet. On the other hand, the rear seats are really minute.
Available with either a 1.4 88bhp or a 1.6 110bhp unit, the Micra C+C should cost less than the ageing Peugeot 206 CC.

Ferrari FXX, an upgraded Enzo
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 16 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The new Ferrari FXX is presented as the most sophisticated Ferrari in all time, F1s excepted. Only 20 highly skilled (and wealthy) customers will be granted the right to spend € 1.5 million (£1 million) for a car they won’t even drive on open roads for it’s not homologated. As a consequence, it won’t be a competition model either. Actually, clients will exclusively use it on track and, thanks to its on board telemetry system, gather information that will be exploited by Ferrari for further development. The FXX is powered by a 6262cc V12 engine delivering 800bhp at 8500rpm coupled with an F1-inspired gearbox changing gears in 100ms, a figure almost matching that of a real F1. Moreover, it’s possible to adapt the various spoilers configuration to suit a specific circuit. Along with an innovative shape allowing a 40% increase of the downforces, 19’’ Bridgestone slick tyres and special extra-large brakes designed by Brembo composed of ceramic and metal, reaching the limits of the car will require a skilled pilot’s know-how. On request, the FXX can get a passenger seat.

The Ferrari diesel exists!
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 15 June 2005 | (1) Comments | Permalink
Believe it or not, but the Ferrari diesel exists and is for sale in the south of France, for €38,000 (approx. £24,000). In fact, this is a Ferrari 400i whose owner replaced the engine with that of a... boat! Yes, the mythical V12 has given way to a 6-litre 6-in-line turbodiesel made by VM, delivering 175bhp.
Yes, this frenchy deserves a nasty sentence, but then, Ferrari is rumoured to proceed with tests on a 612 Scaglietti diesel! That on the photo below was followed and the photographer reported a strange noise, ground-oriented exhausts and strange smokes. If it's true, what on earth is Ferrari doing?
There were once rumours of talks between Audi and Maserati, when Fiat's misfortunes were peaking. It was question of putting the V10 TDI into the Maserati Quattroporte. Happily, this never happened.
But then, since even Jaguar makes an XJ diesel, why not a Quattroporte V8 JTDM one day?

Last spies of the new Mercedes S-Class
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 15 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Yes, the last ones for the official presentation to the press will take place next Monday. On these photos, we notice moulded wheel arches recalling those of the Mazda RX8. A good reference! The tailgate may look quite similar to that of the BMW 7-series, which is more disputable. Even more disputable, in my view, is the iDrive-like system in the cockpit of the new Merck. Indeed, just like in the BMW, there’s a rotary button between the front seats and an additional screen on the centre of the facia. Did Mercedes’s designers lack inspiration?
The new W221 will have the tough task of re-editing the success of its predecessor, which has sold 480,000 copies hitherto. New four-valve-per-cylinder V6 and V8 engines should replace the actual ones, with 3 valves per cylinder only. There are even talks of an impressive V12 CDI. Besides, AMG is said to be developing a 6.5 biturbo V12 delivering 630bhp! They could be coupled with a 7-speed automatic gearbox whose lever will be mounted behind the wheel.
Apparently, Mercedes has paid a great attention to meet the US market requirements, a market where the BMW 7-Series meets considerable success.

Le Mans win for a Peugeot Diesel?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 15 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
This is the French carmaker’s new goal for 2007, as they told it yesterday. At the end of 2005, they will withdraw from the WRC and completely dedicate themselves to make an HDI engined-car win. They will also take part in the Le Mans Endurance Series at Spa, Silverstone, Nürburgring and Istanbul.
The feasibility of the project still has to be confirmed early 2006, but then, the first prototypes should be on track late 2006. Besides, they will be fitted with a particulate filter called DPFS (Diesel Particulate Filter System). Thus, Peugeot seems to confirm a trend they had initiated with the diesel RC prototype in 2002.
This is not the first time a carmaker wants to win Le Mans with technological devices of its own: in 1991, Mazda had won the famous race with a car propelled by a rotary engine, which was prohibited the following year…

Jaguar XJ 2.7 diesel to become taxi drivers’ new favourite?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 14 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Along with external subtle changes, the Jaguar XJ gets a diesel engine, the same as the S-Type’s and the Peugeot 607’s. This 2.7 litre V6, fitted with 2 turbochargers, delivers 207bhp and up to 435Nm of torque. In the mean time, Audi releases its new A8 V8 TDI delivering 326bhp… The Jaguar also comes with a particulate filter, an uprated braking system, new logos, electronically controlled active engine mounts and a tyre pressure monitoring system. It reaches 141mph, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds and returns 35mpg.
Now Jaguar can directly compete with the Mercedes S320 CDI, the Audi A8 V6 TDI or the BMW 730d.
Should we be ashamed at seeing luxury brand resorting to diesel engines, even for their highest models? I think not. 1 litre of diesel provides more energy than 1 litre of gasoline, this is why, for the same performance, a diesel engine burns less and, as a consequence, pollutes less.

New Marcos TSO GT2 Coupe
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 14 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
On June 13, Marcos released its new TSO GT2, at London’s Canary wharf Autoexpo. This light sports car (1150kg) receives a GM 5.7 V8 engine delivering up to 475bhp. A dreadful power-to-weight ratio indeed! Thus, the new Marcos accelerates to 60mph in 4 seconds, to 100mph in 9 second and hits a top speed of 185mph, on track needless to say. Thanks to its 50/50 weight ratio, Marcos claims it remains quite easy to drive. Besides, with its impressive torque, it can accelerate from 50 to 70mph in… 2 seconds!
The customer can choose between two packages:
-
Sports Package, including the 475bhp V8, sports suspensions and racing brakes.
-
Tourer Package, with a softer suspension and comfort fittings.
Prices start at £49,995. This is not so costly for a car that can humiliate a TVR Tuscan, a Porsche 911 or a Ferrari F430.

New engines for the Range Rover
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 14 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The Range Rover gets a new engine, to crown its range. Above the 4.4-litre V8 engine inherited from BMW- and so is the Range’s bodyframe - , the Range has now a supercharged 4.2 V8 delivering no less than 400bhp. In fact, this engine is provided by Jaguar, which belongs to the Ford group, just like Land Rover. In the mean time, it receives upgraded suspensions and grille. Now, the Range can reach 130mph, accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 7.1 sec, for an overall consumption of 17.7mpg. Ouch!
All this has a cost: £72,995.
Later, a 3.6 litre V8 turbodiesel should come out. This unit, delivering about 250bhp for a huge 400lb ft torque at least, will be built in Ford’s plant in Dagenham.

Inside the new Punto
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 14 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Quality seems to have lead the designers’ minds when they drew the facia of the new Punto. Obviously, they sought inspiration in Germany, for everything looks neat and slick. Nevertheless, under its camouflage, the curved top of the dash, above the dials recalls that of the Punto MKI. Sadly enough, the wide storage space facing the front passenger on the previous Puntos has disappeared.
So as not to look too dark, the dash takes up the colour of the seats while the controls are the same as the Lancia Ypsilon’s. Apparently, a dual-zone air-conditioning will be available.
Indeed, Fiat decided not to take any risk when designing this dash, which is a risk in itself for it looks a bit commonplace. Let’s wait for official photos though.

Deeper into the Alfa 159
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 14 June 2005 | (2) Comments | Permalink
On June 13, Alfa Romeo released detailed official information about the oncoming 159. We may have already presented the car that’s to take over the 156 quite thoroughly, we can add a few details though. 156 met an impressive success, with 680,000 copies produced between 1997 and 2005, and was the starting point of Alfa’s renewal. They cannot mess up with the 159. Alfa promises optimum quality and safety levels, a better handling and drive and a more flexible cockpit. The contrary would have been quite amazing.
At last, Alfa’s saloon receives a split/fold rear bench, a TFT screen monitoring the stereo and the navigation and numerous storage units. A tri-zone aircon will be offered on highest versions. 8 airbags will protect the passengers, besides, Alfa has implanted airbags protecting the knees. The company hopes the 159 will be granted 5 stars by the EuroNcap.
The dynamic safety of the car should be guaranteed by double wishbones for the front suspension a multilink at the rear and an excellent torsional rigidity of the bodyshell, elaborated on the Premium platform. With 180,000 daNm/rad, Alfa claims it’s the best in its segment.
As for the engines, we had already mentioned what they would be like, the only thing being that the 3.2 unit will develop 260bhp. This engine can be coupled with a 4WD transmission.
There are a few drawbacks though. Being bigger than its predecessor, the 159 will also weight a lot more: from 1480 to 1740kg. An average increase of 200kg! This should have bad consequences on the fuel consumption as well as on prices.
As a beginning, the 159 will be available in 2 outfits, the quality of which also depending on the engine they come with. The lower trim includes electric mirrors and windows, an air-con, 16’’ alloys, ABS, VDC (Alfa’s ESP), 7 airbags, an 8-hp CD stereo and a trip computer. Strangely enough, the foldable rear bench remains optional on every version. All models receive a 6-speed gearbox.
In a few months’ time, the Sport Wagon will be released and a common-rail Multijet V6 3.0 engine will crown the diesel range. Thus, Alfa hopes to compete more efficiently with the Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series and Volvo S40.

BMW M5, a Meant for 5 sports car?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 13 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
No speed limit on certain sections of German motorways: do you guess why German carmakers make the best sporty sedans? In this category, here is BMW’s new ground-to-ground family missile: the M5. Outside, it’s not so spectacular, but its 19’’ alloys and 4 exhaust pipes indicate there is something special under the bonnet. A 4999cc V10 delivering 507bhp at 7750rpm has made it to the BMW 5-series. Not only does this engine take up an F1-like layout, but its block is also cast in the same Landshut-based foundry as those used by Williams. This magnificent piece of machinery, complying with the stringent Euro IV norm, is coupled with a 7-speed SMG III gearbox.
In order to cope with this powerful engine weighing 240kgs, BMW has fitted the M5 with EDC self-adapting dampers and an active steering. The front underframe has been stiffened too. Of course, ESP (called DSC) is standard, but it can be completely disengaged. Thus, it’s possible to make the most of the 50/50 balance of the chassis and the V10 can give its best on a track.
With a governed top speed of 161 mph, you can’t expect to worry the owner of a Ferrari F430.
But, according to Autocar magazine, the M5 can accelerate from 0 to 100mph in 9.8secs. It’s only 0.4sec slower than the Ferrari… Besides, from 0 to 150mph, the Italian 2-seater is defeated by 0.5sec (21 vs 21.5)!
Priced at £61,755, the BMW can be seen as a bargain when you know an F430 costs £124,650.
In the mean time, you can comfortably journey down to the south of Spain with your family and other luggage, enjoying the leather upholstery, the head-up display and the M-Drive, allowing you to tune the car as you wish.
Now, could you imagine cruising at 70mph on the M5 in an M5?

Created in 2003, the successful Land Rover G4 Challenge continues in 2006. Men and women from 18 countries around the world will be given the opportunity to give the best of themselves in an awesome adventure around the World, behind the wheel of an orange Discovery. Needless to say that it takes one to be healthy, sporty, painstaking and mentally balanced to participate in such a race, beginning in Bangkok city and ending on the high altitudes plains of Bolivia.
Working in bi-national teams, competitors will have to sweat their guts out if they want to stand out in the 4 consecutive stages taking place in both urban and remote areas located in Southeast Asia and South America. The winner will be offered a brand new Range Rover.
Don’t think filling a form is enough to get into this adventure. Each nation will organize tests to select 3 competitors, male or female, who next will have to go to an international selection and training event taking place in Eastnor Castle, UK. Only one competitor per nation will eventually be chosen.

New Impreza’s failed lace-lift

Subaru has just released the New Impreza with its Tribeca-like new nose. This is the third restyling in five years for this rival of the Mitsubishi Lancer. The rest of the car hasn’t changed much –only new rear lamps– for it has recently been upgraded, with a stretched wheelbase and a wider track. There will also be a power increase. The new Impreza is expected in the UK late 2005.

Iceman wins hot Montreal grand-prix
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 13 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The grand-prix of Canada did not betray its reputation: it was enthralling from start to finish. It began at the beginning of this 70-lap race: Fisichella jumped from the fourth to the first position while Alonso stole the second position from M.Schumacher, who completely missed his start. He was also passed by Montoya and Raikkonen. Button was third then.
Villeneuve probably hit Takuma Sato and was soon obliged to have the front wing of his car replaced. This cost him 50 seconds and definitively pushed him to the back of the race.
Barrichello decided to start from the pits.
It was only after the first wave of pit stops, initiated by Michael Schumacher on lap 12, that the story met new developments. Fisichella was caught back by misfortune on lap 32: a hydraulic failure on his car forced him to resign, after managing to drive his car back to the pits. Alonso became an uncomfortable leader for he was being hunted by 2 McLarens. After M.Schumacher and Jenson button’s second stop, Alonso hit a wall, not harshly but strongly enough to leave the race.
At that moment the 2 McLarens began leading the race. Shortly after, Heidfleld’s engine exploded, and on lap 46, Button brushed against the tyres in front of the champions’ wall. He stopped his BAR-Honda in the middle of the track, which caused the Safety Car to neutralize the race. Then, confusion invaded the race. Raikkonen, Barrichello, Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Klien, Villeneuve, Massa, Webber, and Trulli seized the occasion to stop for refuelling. Montoya had to wait the following lap to refuel, but, he made 2 fatal mistakes. First, he quit the pits despite the red light an then he passed a Redbull while the Safety Car was still on track. He was blackflagged and disqualified a few laps later.
Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher kept their respective 1st and 2nd positions, ahead of Trulli and Barrichello.
On lap 63, Trulli resigned, because of his brakes, and Rubens took over the third position. This was not to change until the end of the race.
This race was a mere deception for both Renault and Williams-BMW, while Ferrari could hardly expect to put 2 pilots on the podium.
With his deserved victory, Raikkonen has given the championship a new start, now only 22 points behind Alonso.
Who said Formula 1 had become boring and predictable?

Porsche 997 Rinspeed

Let’s put it straight: the 911 is one of the best sports cars ever. But then, there are so many of them everywhere that it looks commonplace. In France, Even a Logan draws more attention! OK, the French have special tastes.
But then, for a few extra pounds, just a few hundred, you can dramatically alter your dull grey 911 into an eye-catching sports car. Take a look at Rinspeed’s catalogue, and start dreaming. At last, your 911 will stand out in the car park when you open it. Yes, in addition to the big 19’’ wheels, the new aerodynamic package, the lowered suspension, you can fit your 911 with gullwing doors, whether it’s a Coupe or a convertible. The last step before the pink Lamborghini Diablo.
Besides, this is the evidence a 911 can be as convenient as a Peugeot 1007 in a crowded car park, provided it’s not too low.

Unexpected pole position for Button
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 11 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
After a rough qualifying session, Button has taken the first position in his BAR, on the overheated dusty Canadian track of Montreal, in 1:15,217. 2 tenths behind, we find Michael Schumacher, who didn’t expect such a good position after his slow practice sessions. Some had forgotten how talented and experienced he is, which helped him make a good time on the patchy track. In 3rd and 4th position there are the 2 Renaults, driven by Alonso and Fisichella. The former, even if a little disappointed, remains thrilled to see Raikkonen, his closest rival, back on the seventh position, for he seeks to extend his championship advantage. Nevertheless, he’ll have to be even luckier than at the end of the last race, on the Nurburgring track if he wants to score a 5th victory.
Behind them, on the 5th position, the McLaren driven by Montoya arrives before the second BAR, driven by Takuma Sato, who didn’t manage to remain faster than his team mate when it was important to.
Raikkonen did not manage to get better than a seventh position for his McLaren, with a revved-up Villeneuve in his Sauber-Petronas right behind him, boosted by the public’s cheers.
9th and 10th are the 2 Toyota drivers, Trulli and Ralf Schumacher.
Felipe Massa qualified his Sauber in 11th position, just ahead of David Coulthard in his Redbull.
13th and 14th positions go for…the 2 Williams-BMWs, respectively driven by Heidfeld and Webber, who committed a few mistakes on the tricky track.
A solid 15th is Albers in his Minardi-Cosworth, who did a good job to keep Kline, driving the 2nd Redbull, behind him. 17th and 18th are the Indian pilot Karthikeyan and Monteiro, both driving a Jordan Toyota.
Patrick Friesachier comes 19th on the second Minardi, while the last pilot to start on the grid will be Rubens Barichello, who was unable to finish a full qualifying lap because of technical problems.
2 unexpected pilot on the fist 2 positions, varied strategies in terms of fuel load and a rough track: all this show that Formula I is now really unpredictable. We can expect a enthralling race tomorrow.

Hyundai Grandeur is worth a glance
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 11 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Replacing the XG, here is the Grandeur, the top of the range Hyundai. Yes, this 489cm-long sedan aims at challenging the Mercedes E-class, BMW 5-series, Audi A6 and Volvo S80. Of course, at first sight, no one would give it a chance: it’s definitely not a turn-head. But then, this car far from being uninteresting, with its spacious and pleasant cockpit, its good overall quality and its discretion. Hyundai’s choice in terms of styling is radically different from that operated by Kia with the gaudy Opirus.
Only 2 engines are available : a 3.3 petrol V6 developing 233bhp and a 2.2 diesel developing 145bhp, which is not enough to make it a dangerous challenger.
Both are coupled with an automatic 5-speed gearbox. As for the suspension, we notice two wishbones at the front and a multilink at the rear. ESP as well as 17’ alloys mounted on 235/55 tyres are standard.
Inside, standard equipment includes a dual zone air-conditioning, a leather upholstery, an Infinty-made stereo and an electrically operated tilt and telescopic steering column.
If it respects Hyundai’s tradition of excellent value for money, the Grandeur might well hope to become more than a confidential executive sedan. If only its diesel had more power...

New Corsa in 2006
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 11 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The new Vauxhall/Opel Corsa should debut in 2006, half a year after its cousin Fiat Punto. Indeed, they will share the same platform, called Gamma, which explains certain similarities, such as the A-pillar. Nevertheless, the raised rear lamps should remain particular to the Fiat.
Another common element will be the 1.3 diesel engine, designed by Fiat. However, GM has kept the right to use Fiat’s diesel technology, so they might elaborate and build a version of their own of this excellent unit. Besides, the new Corsa should be noticeably more stately than its predecessor.
As for petrol engines, they should go on with the "Twin Port" technology, and a sporty turbocharged Corsa OPC developing around 170bhp is expected.

New Audi A8 4.2 TDI
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 11 June 2005 | (2) Comments | Permalink
In terms of power, the Audi A8 4.0 TDI was surpassed by an unexpected opponent, namely the... Volkswagen Phaeton V10 TDI, delivering 313bhp. A weird situation, for Audi is meant to be the luxury brand of the group.
The new V8 4.2 TDI remedies this problem with a power amounting to 326bhp, thanks to 2 turbochargers and new piezoelectric injectors. Yes, this engine is fitted with a common-rail injection system instead of pump-injectors, more efficient but more brutal too.
Power is one thing, torque another: here there’s no less than 650Nm available as soon as 1600rpm, with the help of the variable geometry of the 2 turbos, whose vanes are electrically actuated.
A question remains: why didn’t Audi choose to use the V10 TDI?
The A8 4.2 TDI keeps the Quattro transmission and receives a particulate filter, requiring no maintenance, along with adaptative xenon lights. How can one tell the difference between the former 4.0 and the new 4.2? The latter, like all the A8s now, is adorned with the single-frame grille first seen on the W12 version
With its new heart, the aluminium-framed limousine can dash from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9secs, its top speed being governed to 155mph. The overall consumption allows one to run no less than 25mph: even those who spend more than £50,000 in their car like to save money sometimes.
Now BMW has just released the 300bhp 745d, we can expect a quick response from Mercedes.

Maserati’s sales boosted by the Quattroporte
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 10 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
While Peugeot celebrates the 5 millionth 206, Fiat the 6 millionth Punto, Maserati announce they have built 20,000 cars since 1997, the year Fiat attached Maserati to Ferrari. The 20,000th Maserati is a grey Quattroporte built for the Italian carmaker’s main market, the USA.
Maserati obtained excellent worldwide sales results in 2004, up by 60% from 2003, with 4,600 cars sold. With 2,800 copies made in 2004, the Quattroporte is the key-element to this achievement, Maserati hoping to increase this figure by 80% this year.
Indeed 2005 is following the right trend, which should allow Maserati to be profitable again.
CEO Karl-Heinz Kalfbell emphasizes the possibility for the customer to customize his car as much as he wants is part of the brand’s success, in addition to the qualitative and technical improvements lead by Ferrari.
Maserati built less than 700 cars in 1998, and now it’s united with Alfa Romeo, its expansion should continue.

Nissan takes on Vauxhall's Meriva with Note
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 10 June 2005 | (2) Comments | Permalink
Launched in Japan last January, the Nissan Note should arrive in Europe by the end of 2005. This 399cm long MAV shares its platform with the Nissan Micra, the Renault Modus and Clio III, with a wheelbase stretched to 260cm though.
In the boot, we notice a 25cm deep underfloor cavity. Besides, the cockpit is sprawn with storage spaces, which somewhat compensates its lack of flexibility , if compared to the Meriva’s.
Under the short bonnet, we find a 1.5 petrol engine combined with a CVT transmission. In Europe, a diesel dCi unit coupled with a manual gearbox should be available, as opposite to the 4WD transmission.
Nissan promises the Note will be a very dynamic car: it might become a tough competitor for the Vauxhall Meriva, the Renault Modus and the Fiat Idea.

Lancia back in the UK with Delta III?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 9 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
If you find your Focus, your Astra, your Golf or your Mégane boring, just wait until 2007, the year Lancia should launch the new Delta III.
Contrary to what many think, Lancia is neither dead nor dying, for they sell as many cars as Alfa Romeo with models that were developed for much less. Of course, after an absence of 16 years on the British market, the return will not be easy, but the Delta III might be very convincing.
Elaborated on the same platform as the next Fiat Stilo’s, the long, long awaited new Delta should be fitted with the excellent JTD engines and take over Lancia’s new styling, which counts for more than nothing in the mere success of the new Ypsilon and Musa. The prototype Lancia Gran Turismo has obviously been a source of inspiration.
Nevertheless, the future of Fiat Auto (the owner of Lancia) relies on the success of the oncoming Punto III.

Fighting pollution with satellites ?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 9 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Traffic congestion is a major problem in the UK, especially as it contributes to pollution. To some extent, reducing the number of cars on the roads by 5% could address the problem.
So, to achieve this goal, Transport Department Secretary Alister Darling has unveiled an ambitious project consisting in charging drivers for every mile they drive. How? With the help of satellites! Since they can tell you your route, they also could tell the Transport Department the number of miles you drove, where and when. The price of the mile will depend on the hour of the day, the location and the type of road used.
For example, each mile of city driving during the rush hours would be charged £1.30 while driving 1 mile in the country side at night would cost 2p ‘only’.
Of course, this project requires a very sophisticated system including the installation of GPS receivers in cars.

Nissan Micra 160SR
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 8 June 2005 | (2) Comments | Permalink
The cute Nissan Micra gets more power at last, 3 years after its launch. Don’t be fooled by the 160 SR badge: this new Micra develops 110bhp ‘only’ and not 160, this figure recalling the engine capacity, 1600cc.
The SR letters standing for Street Racing, the sporty Micra will find serious competitors on its way: the Citroen C2 VTS, Mini Cooper, Toyota Yaris 1.5 T-Sport and Ford Fiesta Zetec-S.
The Nissan seems very good -but not class leading- on performance, accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 9.8 seconds and reaching 112mph. It returns 42.8mpg on the combined cycle.
Along with the power increase, the Micra 160SR gets stiffer suspensions, an ESP stability system, a new front spoiler, dark tinted headlamps, graphite finished 16’’alloys, aluminium pedals, white dials, side curtain airbags, a 6-speaker CD system and an air-conditionning.
Priced £9,995, the 3-door Micra 160SR is even cheaper than the Yaris T-Sport. The 5-door version costs £10,645. With an extra £375, you can get a sunroof, while the heated 2-tone leather seats are charged £850. A real bargain.

A thrifty beauty called Mercedes CLS 320 CDI
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 8 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
What about a diesel Mercedes sedan that doesn’t look like a taxi? Now it’s possible for Mercedes has just released the CLS 320 CDI. Yes, Mercedes’s coupe-looking sedan CLS uses a diesel engine. Not any engine though, for this one is a totally new block, fitted with piezoelectric injectors, due to be mounted in most of Mercedes's models. Contrary to what its 320 badge might have indicated, this is not a 3.2 but a 3.0, developing 224bhp.
This new block grants the CLS with very decent accelerations (0 to 60mph in 7.0secs), a low overall consumption, for it runs 30mpg, and a top speed of 152mph. On the CLS, it'll necessarily be coupled with a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
The new CLS 320 CDI meets the EU4 stringent limits without resorting to a particulate filter. Besides, with a torque of 510Nm, available as low as 1,600rpm, its accelerations in top should be impressive.
Waiting for the hypothetical BMW 640d, this Mercedes has no direct rival, so don’t expect the German carmaker to discount this fleet beauty.

A new engine for the BMW Z4
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 8 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
BMW has added a 4-cylinder 2-litre 150bhp engine to the Z4 range, so as to give it a lower entry point level. Even smaller, this new engine offers such technological refinements as the Vanos (variable valve timing) and Valvetronic (valve lift) systems so as to ensure a quick response through the gears, as BMW puts it. It allows the Z4 to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 8secs and to be compliant with the Euro IV norm.
Thanks to this UK-made block, the Z4 is now available for £22,755 on-the-road. A Z4 2.0SE is available too, with the same equipment as the Z4 2.2 SE’s. The Z4 2.0 is cheaper than a Mercedes SLK 2.3 Kompressor, priced £28,055, but more expensive than a Mazda MX5 1.8 Sport, priced £18,000, which is to be replaced very soon. Maybe BMW is anticipating Mazda’s new roadster, seen in the Geneva Motor Show and expected late 2005.

Lexus's RX400h, a green SUV.
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 8 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Toyota has adapted its hybrid technology to the Lexus RX400, which thus becomes the RX400h, a ‘clean’ SUV. Under the bonnet, two engines take place now, a 3.3-litre petrol V6 developing 211bhp and a 167bhp electric unit. But the Japanese engineers thought this was not enough, so, another electric unit (67bhp) is to be found at the rear of the R400h! Yet, the maximum available power amounts to 272bhp.
Below 30mph, the big SUV is propelled by its rear engine. As it is totally silent, it may catch pedestrians by surprise.
Beyond this speed, the V6 smoothly starts and, helped with the other electric engine, allows the RX400h to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 7.4secs! Better than Porsche Cayenne V6 then.
The association of the three motors works in total smoothness, thanks to the CVT transmission.
Even if the RX400h is quite heavy, with a kerbweight of 2 tons, its average fuel consumption reaches no less than to 30mpg. Its C02 emissions match the Euro IV norm. So, is it the ideal car for off-roading? Not quite, for the RX400h prefers straight highways to rocky paths on steep hillsides.
£35,485.00, this is the lowest price if you want to drive a huge SUV with a clear conscience, and this is cheaper than a BMW X5 3.0i. It includes power front seats, a Multi-CD and a cruise control. The £39,540 SE trim adds a sunroof and a leather upholstery while the £44,350 SE-L adds sattelite navigation combined with a hand-free phone. Do you think Ken Livingston will buy one?

VW unveils Passat Estate
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 8 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
VW has just unveiled the Passat Estate, whose sales will debut on August 18 in Germany. The rear of the car has been totally redesigned, doors included. Thus, the stowage space totals 1,731 litres or 603 if the rear bench is not folded. It's less than the Vauxhall Vectra's, which offers up to 1,850 litres though. As it is possible to load up to 638kgs in the boot, a hydraulic self-levelling system is available for the rear suspension.
The front passenger seat backrest can fold and a cargo rail system can take place in the floor. In addition to this, you get an electric opening system for the tailgate.
Besides, the length remains identical to that of the Sedan, and so is the engine range. Prices will debut at 22,300€ in Germany.
After 4.3 million copies produced so far, the Passat Estate seems likely to meet success again, especially as the number of its direct rivals has shrunk. Contrary to Peugeot, with the 407 SW, and Renault, with the Laguna Estate, VW continues to make a high-capacity executive Estate.

The return of the Fiat Croma
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 7 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
After a 9-year absence (production ceased in 1996 and NOT in 1994 as the Fiat press file mentions it) on the executive car market, the Fiat Croma is back. Of course, the new one has nothing in common with its ancestor, which shared its platform with the Lancia Thema, the Saab 9000 and the Alfa Romeo 164. The new Croma shares 30% of its components with the Vauxhall Cavalier, thanks for the now dead Fiat-GM alliance. It takes up the Vauxhall’s platform, suspension (multilink at the rear) and electro-hydraulic steering.
Is it a sedan? Is it an estate? In fact, it’s both. The Giugiaro designed new family Fiat is bigger than what one would imagine when looking at the photos. Actually, its proportions are unusual in this segment for the new Croma has a particular architecture, meant to associate the advantages of an estate with those of a sedan. So, if its length (475cm) and its width (177cm) are commonplace, its height (160cm) is 10 cm above that of its rivals.
All this results in a particular tall car, combining bulging wheel arches and smooth curves. Yet, if it gives a sense of solidity, the front end looks a little dull.
You’d expect the cockpit to benefit from these dimensions. Bingo! The accommodation is really impressive, especially as the seats were raised by 10cm.
Once again, Fiat betrays its reputation of poor quality: the finish of this cockpit could serve as an example to such cars as the 407, the Laguna or the Mondeo.
Besides, the driving position is excellent, with a raised gear lever.
Nevertheless, versatility could have been better: the rear bench splits and folds, but will neither slide nor recline.
The capacity of the boot varies from 500 to 1610 liters, which is an excellent value.

Uk new car sales drop slows down
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 7 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Car sales were still decreasing in May, but on a slower pace. The total number of registrations amounted to 187,900, but its 3.4% fall is the smallest so far in 2005. The loss of Rover and the rise of interest rates partly account for this fall. Chances are that this trend should be inverted in June.
The fleet market share was up from 48.6% a year ago, reaching 49.9% now. The corollary of this was a 5.3% drop of the private sector volume, with a 45.4% share. Business sales dropped by 11.5%, representing 4.7% of the market.
As for the diesels, they accounted for 36.8% of the market, the highest rate this year. The convertibles followed the same trend, and reached a record 6%
With the fall of Rover, the share of imported cars grew up to 83.3% of the market.

New Suzuki Grand Vitara
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 6 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The 16-year-long career of the actual Grand Vitara is reaching an end: its successor should debut in the Frankfurt Motor Show next September.
If the name remains the same, the rest totally changes. The sharp-edged trendy body hides a new monocoque structure mounted of a fully independent suspension.
With this giant step forward, Suzuki fills the wide technological gap between the Grand Vitara and its main opponents, such as the Toyota Rav-4, the Honda CR-V or the Hyundai Tucson.
Foreshadowed by the 2-X Concept shown in the New York Motor Show last March, the new Grand Vitara is bigger than its predecessor, with a length of 439cm instead of 422, and a wheelbase of 264cm instead of 248!
Accommodation should benefit from this upsizing, and the passengers will feel all the more at ease since the dashboard has been redesigned in a style somewhat recalling that of the Mazda 6.
In a first time, 2 engines, a 145bhp 2.0-litre four-in-line and 184bhp 2.7-litre V6 should be available.
Interestingly enough, this new Suzuki gives us a hint of Fiat’s future SUV, for they are to share their underpinnings and factory, in Hungary.

The VW New Beetle gets face-lifted
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 5 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The face-lifted New Beetle will be launched next September at the Frankfurt Motorshow.
Externally, we notice new lamps and bumpers as well as redesigned wings, conferring the car a more aggressive look.
In the cockpit, there are minor changes only: a new trim, a new console and a few aluminium-like ornaments.
Sadly enough, the new 2.5-liter five-in-line engine delivering 150bhp as well as the DSG transmission should be reserved to the American market.
Indeed, VW has noticed European customers prefer cheaper New Beetles with smaller engines.
As a consequence, 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 and turbocharged 1.8 units will be offered in Europe, along with a 1.9 TDI 105.
Fortunately, prices should remain more or less steady.

A new New Beetle in 2008?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 5 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Renewing the myth of the legendary Beetle, the New Beetle, launched in 1998, has been far more successful in the US than in Europe.
Volkswagen intends to replace it in 2008, as the Ragster concept-car shown in Detroit last January lets us guess what it’s going to look like.
Built on the same platform as the Golf V’s, the 2008 New Beetle should also be fitted with the same engines, including the powerful 2.0 TDI 140 and petrol FSI units.
It should also remedy his predecessor’s biggest drawback: the lack of rear and boot space.
Still built in Mexico, it’s not sure it’ll be more affordable than the actual New Beetle, especially if it still has no direct opponent, unless the new Mini – which is expected in 2006 – significantly grows…

New Avensis 2.2 D4D makes ecology optional
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 5 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Even looking common-place, a sedan may meet success: this is the case for the Toyota Avensis, sold 140,000 copies in 2004, which is a logical reward given its qualities.
The latter is more particularly interesting for it’s fitted with new ceramic glow plugs and piezoelectric injectors allowing the injection pressure to reach 1800 bars. As a consequence, it was possible for Toyota to reduce the compression ratio down to 15:8, which is the lowest in the world of diesel engines. Reliability should benefit from this.
Moreover, Toyota has developed a new filtration device called D-Cat, which, along with the engine improvements quoted above, helps drastically reduce pollution, without any specific maintenance. Toyota claims the Avensis 2.2 D-Cat has the lowest combined NOX and PM emission rates in the market.
Why does the D-Cat remain optional then? Besides, it's not even available on the lower 2.2.
Apart from that, we notice the installation a new sound-proof windshield and a 6-speed gearbox.
The Japanese carmaker has paid great attention to reducing maintenance costs, with an oil exchange every 18,000 miles. Let’s remark that the D4D still accepts even mineral oil.
On the other hand, there still is a timing-belt, which needs replacement every 60,000 miles. Why not a chain, like on Fiat’s recently awarded 1.3 Multijet?
This excellent lacklustre sedan’s prices start from £18,145, and the combined fuel consumption amounts to 47.9 mpg on the 150bhp version and 46.3 on the 177 one.

Alfa 159's prices make a BMW look cheap
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 3 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Presented at the Geneva Motorshow, the Alfa Romeo 159 is about to go on sale. This executive car will replace the ageing but still beautiful 156.
Built on the “Premium” platform co-developed with GM and drawn by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the 159 offers a very elegant styling and powerful engines, even if those burning petrol might upset the Alfisti.
Indeed, they are elaborated from GM blocks, the Italian engineers having totally re-designed the cylinder heads and pistons though.
3 of them will be available: 1.9JTS, 2.2 JTS and 3.2 JTS, all fitted with direct injection and Twin Phaser technology. Powers vary from 160 to 250bhp.
As for the diesel units, they all derive from the existing 1.9 and 2.4 MJTD, except the new VM-designed 3.0 V6, which is to come later. The 1.9 8V delivers 120bhp, the 1.9 16V 150 and the 2.4 20V 200.
But passing from the 156 to the 159 will not be so easy for customers. No matter if the 159 is far bigger than the 156 (466 cm vs. 444 cm), it’s also a great deal more expensive, with a basic price estimated at £20,000 vs. £16,370 for the 158 1.8 TS!
By way of example, here are the price estimations for Switzerland and Italy:
159 1.9JTS Progression 38.000 CHF, 29.000 €
159 2.2JTS Progression 40.000 CHF, 30.500 €
159 3.2JTS Q4 Distinctive 52.000 CHF, 39.500 €
159 1.9JTDm Progression 38.000 CHF, 29.000 €
159 1.9JTDm Progression 40.000 CHF, 30.500 €
159 2.4JTDm Distinctive 46.000 CHF, 35.000 €
Let’s hope these prices will drop, otherwise, if compared to the BMW 3-Series, the 159 would be penalised by its expected higher depreciation, even if quality seems to be the same level as a BMW's at first sight. Besides, many 156 owners could be tempted not to replace their car with a costly 159 and, for example, buy a cheaper Peugeot 407 instead.

DTI investigates on MG-Rover
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 3 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
The British Department of Trade and Industry has launched an inquiry into the accounts of Phoenix Venture Holdings, which owned MG-Rover.
Secretary of Trade and Industry Alan Johnson wants to know exactly what happened to the group since the appointment of Administrators on April 8 was lethal shock on the employees as well as the suppliers.
Phoenix Venture Holdings is suspected of having traded while being insolvent, which is punishable with prison. Nevertheless, it’s legal to trade if there are good chances of recovery. In other words, Alan Johnson wants to make sure that SAIC was really willing to buy MG-Rover as it was claimed.
Phoenix Venture Holdings had obtained a lot of money from BMW and the sale of assets around the world. What have they done with it?

Mild nose-job for the 307
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 3 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
After 4 years of success, Peugeot refurbishes the 307, endangered by the Vauxhall Astra, VW Golf V and... Citroën C4.
Don’t expect major changes though. The front end gets a 407-like look, with a wide grille and stretched headlamps, diode-like lamps take place on the rear end and the cockpit is given a dust, receiving the same sound system as the 407’s along with new heater controls.
Xenon lamps and a tyre-pressure monitoring are now available, and the SW can now be fitted with leather-covered dash.
Fog lamps migrate from the inside of the headlamps to the bumper and become circula, even aluminium-rimmed on higher versions.
Under the aluminium bonnet, the powerful 177bhp 2.0 is no longer reserved to the CC and the lower 2.0-liter engine’s power is raised to 141bhp.
Prices should get an average £600 increase.

The DS, a fifty-year-old goddess, part I
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 3 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Yes, the DS is nearly fifty. It appeared at the Paris Motor Show, on October 6, 1955. Drawn by Flaminio Bertoni, the DS astonished everybody: it was 20 years ahead. Everything about this car sent its rivals to the museum: hydro-pneumatic suspension, front disc brakes, front wheel-drive, hydraulic gear change, intense use of plastic and aluminium and a splendid streamlined body. The engineers, ruled by André Lefebvre, had been summoned to give the best of themselves. Special congratulations to Paul Magès, for designing the whole hydraulic system.
On the other hand, the engine was inherited from the Traction, and even if Walter Becchia had endowed it with a new top, the DS would always lack the flat-6 once planned for the top-of-the-range Citroen. The company was simply short of money to achieve its development.
The public was more than enthusiastic: on the first day, 12,201 orders were placed. At the end of the show, this figure rose to 79,996! Even if the DS reached new technoligical summits, it remained affordable.
Citroen was both delighted and embarrassed: only 8 copies had been made hitherto. If fact, the car was still a prototype and the first customers underwent appalling reliability problems. It took Citroen a few years to solve them: by the time, the DS had acquired a dubious reputation…
But then, the company constantly improved and developed its goddess on wheels. 1958 saw the introduction of a simplified DS called ID, which was declined in an estate body (Safari)the following year. In 1960, the convertible came out in the Paris Motorshow. In 1961, the engine was modified and saw its power rise from 75 to 83bhp.
In 1964, the luxurious Pallas trim was introduced and in 1965, the old 1911 cc unit was deeply modified (on the DS only). It received a 5-bearing crankshaft and its capacity rose. From then on available in 1985 cc 90bhp and 2175 cc 109bhpversions, it allowed the DS to jump into the highway age with ease and elegance, helped by a new 5-speed gearbox.
It still had no real competitor: the Rover P6, the Peugeot 404, the Vauxhall Cresta, the Mercedes 220, all of them were left far behind in terms of comfort, roadholding or braking power.

The DS, a fifty-year-old goddess, part II
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 3 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Bertoni died in 1963, but he had had time to draw a new front end for the DS. It came out in 1967, and once again, the audience was amazed. 4 headlamps took place under a glass panel, conferring the big Citroen an aggressive look. The central 2 lamps rotated the same direction as the wheels and in the mean time, automatically adjusted to the height of the car.
In 1969, a new “safety” dashboard took place in the cockpit and an electronic injection was adapted to the DS 21, which then developed up to 130bhp.
The ID 19 was replaced by the DSpecial and the ID 20 by the DSuper.
In 1971, the 2175 cc engine evolved to 2347 cc, and its power rose to 115bhp if alimented by a carburettor or 139bhp with the electronic injection, allowing the DS to reach a top speed of 118 mph. What a contrast with the 90 mph of the 1955 DS 19!The 2175 cc engine did not disappear though, and was mounted in a new DSuper5 instead.
In the same year, the production of the refined cabriolet ceased.
In 1973, the production ceased in Paris and was transferred to Aulnay-Sous-Bois, on a new assembly line designed for the CX, launched the following year
In 1974, the businessman-intended DS Prestige Pallas disappeared.
On April 24, 1975, the last DS sedan, a blue 23 Pallas, rolled out of the factory, it was the 1,330,755th made in France.
If we add the copies made abroad (in Slough, UK, for example, or Forest, Belgium), the figure rises to 1,455,746. Neither the CX (even if it sold honourably) nor the XM (a real failure) were able to reproduce the dazzling success of the DS, and I don’t think the future C6 will.
Even after 20 years, the DS remained out of reach in terms handling and ride and dynamic safety. Besides, its 0.36 cz drag coefficient was still unsurpassed, even by the CX.
But what remains of this car, beyond its charisma and its unique character, is the flavour of the dream.
Those who had designed it did not care of silly marketing laws, they just wanted to make their dreams come true.

Audi Q7, for rich Tuaregs
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 3 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Audi had given a hint of its new SUV 2 years ago, with a concept car called Pike’s Peak. The definitive version, called Q7, will be presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in October.
Offering accommodation for 7 people, this 4.85-meter long SUV, drawn by Walter De Silva, will compete with the BMW X5, Mercedes ML, Lexus RX 300, Range Rover and Volkswagen Touareg, with which it will share its platform.
The Q7 should be powered by the well-known 3.2 V6, 4.2 V8, and 5.0 V10 TDI. A twin-turbo evolution of the 4.2 seems to be underway, and it might develop about 500bhp.
To avoid direct competition with the Touareg, the big Audi will be more expensive, with a basic price of £32,000 at least, and more refined.
Audi intends to sell the Q7 in the US mainly – the biggest market for SUVs– and will launch it there early 2007.

A welcoming Cayman
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 2 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Derived from the Boxster, the Cayman is meant by Porsche to reach a wider audience. To do so, the Stuttgart-based carmaker has paid great attention to practicality, fitting its new car with 2 boots, the total capacity of which is claimed to be more important than a BMW 330i’s.
Weighing the same as a Boxster S or so, the Cayman S is propelled by a 3.4-liter flat-six cylinder engine producing 295bhp and 250 lb-ft, allowing it to reach a top speed of 171 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 sec, with the standard manual 6-gear box. With the optional Tiptronic transmission, it’ll take 0.7 sec more.
Standard equipment includes a PSM stability control system and 18-inch wheels, whereas 19-inch wheels, PASM damping system and Ceramic brakes remain optional. If fitted with these last 3 items, the Cayman S is said to be faster around a track than a 911.
The Cayman S will go on sale in the UK on November 26 at a basic price of £43,930. Cheaper versions should come later.

Renault Clio III
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 2 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
In September, Renault will present the achievement of the X 85 program, i.e. the new Clio. Sharing its platform with the Nissan Micra, this new supermini will be built in Renault’s Turkish plant of Bursa, for which the French carmaker has invested € 216 million.
With a 15-centimeter increased length, the Clio III should provide a slightly better accommodation than its predecessor. Renault targeting a 5-star score at the EuroNcap, a part of this increase will be dedicated to shock-absorbing zones.
As a consequence, the Clio III will be heavier. To cope with this, more powerful engines are planned. The weak 1.2 8V must disappear while the 1.5 dCi’s power will rise up to 110bhp and the 1.6’s to 115bhp. Besides, a new 143bhp block is to be introduced.
To crown it all, an RS version fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-litre 200bhp engine coupled with a 6-speed gearbox should be launched in the mean time (see our picture).
Following Peugeot’s example, Renault has decided to endow the Clio with a foldable hard-top late 2007.
We can expect nice fights in the supermini category, for the new Clio, Punto, Corsa and 207 will all be presented in a few months’ time.

Logan, the low-cost Renault
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 2 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
A modern brand-new car for £5,500? Renault has made it possible with the Logan, built in Romania by Dacia, in a first time.
Initially designed for emergent markets only, this 3-box sedan eventually arrives in Western Europe : Renault had not expected the public to be so interested in such a basic car.
Don’t expect to find any trace of luxury in the cockpit. There is no power windows, no glove box, the door panels are made of a single plastic piece, the seats roughly trimmed, and the carpet is ultra thin. All this may look cheap, it remains solidly assembled. Besides, the accomodation is better than a Megane's!
Technically speaking, the Logan is not an antique. It uses the same platform as the future Clio, and in western Europe, the front suspension will receive an anti-roll bar.
On the road, you are amazed at how comfortable the suspension is, but it’s impossible to forget the engine noise. Even if the steering is heavy, the car remains easy to drive, its road holding being very safe.
The 75bhp 1.4 engine provides decent acceleration, but nothing more.
Deprived of a power steering, but fitted with ABS brakes and 2 airbags, the entry level Logan should be available for £5,500 in 2007. Even if the fleet-market will find this offer astonishing, don’t forget that for the same price, any second-hand Golf, Megane or Corolla offers a better value for money along with a higher safety level. The Logan was credited 3 stars only by the EuroNcap.

Exelero is a Maybach, not an F-117
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 1 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Maybach has developed this 5890-mm-long coupe for the German tyre maker Fulda, which intends to use it as a “reference vehicle” for its new generation of tyres.
Notwithstanding its 2.5 tons, this stealth bomber styled weird car, powered by a V12 developing 690bhp was able to reach 218 mph on the Nardo track.
Don’t be afraid : it carries no bomb and will remain a one-off.

Don't call Mazda 5 an MPV!
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 1 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
Mazda’s new MAV is now available in the UK. This time, the Hiroshima-based carmaker hopes more than a succès d’estime. Mazda has gathered all the components to succeed in this range, having for example stylishly designed the body and fitted it with 2 sliding doors, which is a one of a kind feature on a MAV.
2 petrol engines, a 1.8 and a 2.0 litres giving respectively 115 and 145b^hp as well as a 2.0 litres diesel engine, developing either 110 or 143bhp, are available. Strangely enough, the latter is not provided by Ford, which owns 50% of Mazda.
Prices start at a competitive £14,097 for the 1.8 TS, the most expensive version being the 2.0 Sport Diesel (143bhp), sold £17,900.
However, comfort is another key element for success, and the last 3 and 6 show this is not Mazda’s forte…

Peugeot 207 not unveiled before Januray 2006
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 1 June 2005 | (0) Comments | Permalink
A few 207 will be assembled in Poissy, for a general tune-up, in June. Like the Punto III, the 207 will be bigger than its predecessor, a new trend prompted by toughened European protection norms. Peugeot’s new supermini will be based on the same PF1 platform as the Citroen C3. Its 206-inspired body will alternate new materials: aluminium for the bonnet and plastic for the front wings.
The 75bhp 1.4 8V and 95bhp 1.4 16V TU engines should be renewed, but more is to come: this Peugeot, whose internal code is A7, will be the first to be fitted by the new gasoline direct injection (GDI) 1.6 litre PSA has co-developed with BMW. Having an exact capacity of 1598 cc, being endowed with a Valvetronic system, this engine is said to develop either 115 or 163bhp in a turbocharged version that is to come later, before the sporty 170 ps RC though.
As a great specialist of diesel engines, Peugeot will also offer a wide range of his famous HDI: 70bhp 1.4 , 90bhp 1.6 and 110bhp 1.6.
Like the 206, the 207 will be declined in numerous bodies: 3-5 door hatchback, estate (SW) and convertible (CC). A 207-based minivan, called 2007, will come to light in… 2007.
A concept-car giving a hint of the 207 will be shown in the Frankfurt Motor show next September, for an official launch set in January, i.e. a few months after the new Clio and Punto.
Indeed, Peugeot needs to be careful, for the popular 206 won’t be easy to replace. At least, we know Peugeot has not committed the same mistake as when they had decided to replace the 205 by both the 106 and the 306…

Cadifiat or Fiadillac ?
By Stéphane Schlesinger on 1 June 2005 | (1) Comments | Permalink
Specially meant for Europe, here is the Cadillac BLS. Imitating the angular styling of the CTS, this compact sedan will offer diesel engines, a prerequisite for success in Europe.
Guess what? Its 1.9 diesel unit is called JTD in Italy! Yes, this is the first Fiat-powered Cad’ ever: a remnant of the dead Fiat-GM alliance. This is far from being a bad bet, since Fiat’s know-how in terms of common-rail technology is world widely acknowledged.
Another interesting point: the platform of this new Cadillac is called “Premium”. Does it ring a bell? To me, yes: this is the name given to another platform: the Alfa 159’s! No need to worry anyway: all these components are technologically excellent.
Cadillac hopes to sell 20,000 copies a year of its new front-wheel-drive car, which will be available in Europe only. To achieve this goal, other engines will be offered: a 2.8 turbo diesel V6 and two turbocharged petrol engines, of respectively 2.0 and 2.8 litres.
The American carmaker has not disclosed any horsepower rating yet, but promises the handling and ride will be among the best in class, relying on Mc Pherson front struts and a multilink rear suspension. Of course, the equipment list will match Cadillac’s standards, including a touch-screen operated DVD-based GPS system combined with a Bluetooth telephone.
This is not too much to compete with the Audi A4, the Mercedes C-Class or the BMW 3-Series late 2005.
